According to sources, Putin wants to make Viktor Medvedchuk governor of the Donetsk Oblast to secure his active participation in Ukrainian politics. The proposal by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to make Medvedchuk an official mediator in the tripartite contact group negotiating peace in the Donbas was part of Putin’s plan. Medvechuk is Putin’s close confidant and longtime head of the “Ukrainian Choice” movement, a pro-Russian political group in Ukraine.
