Estonian Border City of Narva – Putin’s Next Target ?

The “next Crimea,” Berman suggests, is more likely to be the northeast of Estonia. The city of Narva there, the Baltic state’s third largest, has an 82 percent ethnic Russian population. 94 percent of the city’s residents speaks Russian. Like the Crimea’s Sevastopol, which headquarters Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, Narva was a Russian port city and the site of major battles — against the Swedes, in the early eighteenth century, and the Germans, during World War II.

Russia justified its intervention in Ukraine by claiming a right to protect Russian speakers and “compatriots” in the former Soviet republic. Last week, a Russian diplomat raised concerns over the treatment of Russian speakers in Estonia, saying, “Language should not be used to segregate and isolate groups,” and expressing alarm “by steps taken in this regard in Estonia as well as in Ukraine.”

Russian worries are not without merit. As Berman writes, “Narva is a major symbol of what is one of Estonia’s largest domestic problems, its effort to reduce the size of its Russian minority population through the mechanism of denying a substantial percentage of its residents citizenship.”

Less than half of Narva’s residents have Estonian citizenship while some 36 percent are Russian citizens. Another 16 percent holds no citizenship at all.

Social problems disproportionately affect Estonia’s Russian speakers, from unemployment to crime to drug and alcohol abuse. 40 percent of Narva’s residents is jobless and the city has one of the highest HIV rates in Europe.

Poland Is Quietly Mobilizing Its Army Reservists

It seems the words of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warning that “the world stands on the brink of conflict, the consequences of which are not foreseen… Not everyone in Europe is aware of this situation,” are a little more real than some (US equity buyers) might suspect. As The Week’s Crispin Black reports, at least 7,000 Polish workers in Europe have received call-up papers as army reservists in the last few weeks. Polish authorities dismiss it as “routine” but the men note this has never happened before.

Right Sector is not popular per se, but they have a lot of sway as a moral authority on #Maidan. This could be very damaging to new gov’t.

Some Ukrainians soldiers defected, surrendered. These remain loyal.

Ukraine’s elite Black Berets group of marines refuse to lay down their arms at the request of Russian orders. The unit has loaded up its vehicles and are ready to deploy to mainland Ukraine, but will only go with all of their weapons, ammunition, APCs and the base’s Ukrainian flag.

If anyone tries to enter the base, they will open fire.

“We are men of war, accordingly, we are responsible for our vehicles, for our weapons. Nobody is being captured, no one is winning, and we see no reason why we should leave anything behind,” – said Captain Oleksandr Kul.

The standoff contrasts that of the Belbek airforce base, where the unit’s commander Yuliy Mamchur surrendered all weapons and equipment to the Russian forces and would not allow his men to arm themselves in self defense.

Zero Hedge Got it Wrong

I love Zero Hedge and don’t want to knock it too hard, but in being cutting edge, sometimes they over report details, or don’t thoroughly verify.

This story from Feb 21 never happened:

Ukraine Region Declares Independence Sending Dollar Bonds To Record Low; Russian Ruble Tumbles To 5 Year Low

I suspect a mistranslation somewhere. Yet Zero Hedge took this false fact and attributed to it market turbulence.
