WTF moment @ 39:45 when Ry Dawson claims the head of the European Jewish Commission is a Nazi. Ry should read something about Bandera too. I recommend “Why Are Jews So Afraid of Stepan Bandera?” on Tablet Mag. He doesn’t seem to know that Bandera turned against the Nazis after they forbade the creation of a Ukrainian state.
Bandera’s brothers died in Auschwitz, by the way.
I just recorded a television show for channel 2 Lviv
There were four of us at the table. I was introduced as a former US paratrooper officer.
The three of them insisted we must war for Crimea . . . because . . . we are one nation — some populist nonsense like that. They were also against gun ownership because, they said, Ukrainian society is not ready.
I was against warring for Crimea and in favor of gun ownership.
I also made the point that Russia’s internal divisions would be stronger when foreign military aren’t helping Ukraine and that the west is trying to create an enemy of Russia in order to influence them in support of the petro-dollar.
The show will air at 22:20 tonight.
#Lviv television appearance: I spoke against warring for #Crimea & for gun ownership. The three others were for war but against guns – wtf!?
Why Vladimir Konstantinov want Crimean Secession
I think Ukraine would be fine without Crimea. Perhaps even better off. I just feel sorry for the Ukrainians and Tartars who are there. I also want to point out this evidence of massive Russian corruption.
The fact that it’s allowed is Russia’s #1 problem. The best thing Putin can do to strengthen Russia is fight corruption. I think that’s against his nature, though. KGB does what KGB knows.
Stepan Bandera — As Ukrainians have been arguing (in vain) for 70 years
“On June 30, 1941, the Germans entered the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. Bandera’s nationalists joined Nazi Einsatzgruppen in carrying out pogroms against the city’s Jews, along with political prisoners and opposition members. (Bandera himself was in Krakow.) The same day, the OUN declared an independent Ukrainian state; when Hitler refused to acknowledge the state, Bandera was imprisoned for refusing to rescind the declaration, and he spent the rest of the war in Sachsenhausen. His brothers were sent to Auschwitz, where they died. In 1944, Bandera was released, but as Timothy Snyder has written, his fellow nationalists told him not to return to Ukraine out of fear for his life. “Thousands of Ukrainians died fighting for independence under his name,” Snyder wrote in 2010. “It is this legacy of sacrifice that many in western Ukraine today associate with Bandera, and do not wish to be forgotten.”
So while Bandera and his men were responsible for killing Jews, their ideology wasn’t fundamentally anti-Semitic; rather, it was pro-Ukrainian, and anti- everyone who appeared to be in the way of that, which included the pro-Soviet Jews. “For the Nazis, anti-Semitism was an unconditional core belief, and Nazi anti-Semitism was an all-or-nothing proposition that was both immutable and immune to circumstances,” explained Alexander John Motyl, a professor of political science at Rutgers, in an email. “For the Ukrainian nationalists, their attitude toward Jews depended on political circumstances.” The primary enemy of the OUN was Poland and then the Soviet Union—or, rather, Poles and Russians. Jews were a “problem” because they weren’t Ukrainian, and because they were implicated, or believed to be implicated, in helping the Soviets take over Ukrainian territory. Indeed, Motyl noted, the resolutions of the Second Great OUN Congress, held in Krakow in April 1941, on the eve of the German invasion, specifically cautioned Ukrainians against anti-Jewish activity and pogroms. Of the 63 attempted and actual assassinations carried out by Ukrainian nationalists in the interwar period, only one was directed against a Jew. Compare this with 36 Ukrainians, 25 Poles, and a Russian. . . .
Bandera, who never returned to Ukraine, was killed in Munich in 1959, probably by the KGB—making him the ultimate martyr to the Ukrainian cause, and the ultimate bugaboo for Soviet propagandists, who began referred to Ukrainian nationalists as banderovtsi.”

With this recent crises, Jews have been very vocal in formal and informal channels, arguing that there is no serious anti-semitism in Ukraine. I’ve been posting about this, including an interview with Kyiv’s head rabbi and an official statement of Ukraine’s Jewish community.
This seems like a recent change in rhetoric.
Until fairly recently, there was still a struggle over history. For example, a Sixty-Minutes show in the late 1980s pretty much argued that all Ukrainians were Nazis.
My hunch is that the media was trying to cover up Soviet crimes by portraying all dissenters as Nazis.
Don’t get my wrong. I’m relieved that history is being corrected. I just think the suddenness of the change in historical interpretation is worth noting.
Shevchenko, Guns & Liberty
Yesterday, I caught the beginning of a stirring discussion about Ukraine’s national hero, poet Taras Shevchenko, at a Lviv bookstore. There was standing room only.
Four literary figures offered their views, including Andri Drozda who drew strong connections between Shevchenko’s respect for people who were able to defend themselves and Ukraine’s present-day situation.
Ukrainians, take it from a Bosnian: the EU flag is just a rag in the wind
“As the economist Michael Roberts notes, “the people of Ukraine are left with Hobson’s choice: either go with KGB-led crony capitalism from Russia or go with equally corrupt pro-European ‘democrats’”.
Roberts predicts that Ukraine’s foreign debt is about to double, “as it takes on new debt from the IMF and the cost of existing dollar and euro-debt jumps as the hryvnia is devalued”. It hardly comes as a surprise to us in former Yugoslavia. At the beginning of its dissolution, the Yugoslav foreign debt was £9.5bn; today, after all the “help” we got from the troika, it’s more than £107bn.
In their struggle to overcome Russian occupation and survive all the Trojan horses from the institutions of global capitalism, it is to be hoped that people in Ukraine learned a thing from the war in Bosnia – that a deus ex machina from the west will never land . . . .”

Instructions for How Ukrainian Can Purchase Weapons
This has been making the rounds in social media. I can’t vouch for its accuracy. I also don’t see any specification of which types of guns Ukrainians can buy or any mention of procedures for foreigners.
(November 2013) Ukraine signs $10 billion shale gas deal with Chevron
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/11/05/us-ukraine-chevron-idUSBRE9A40ML20131105
I don’t know the relevance or status of this agreement, which, presumably was signed by the Yanukovych regime. What’s clear is that a lot of powerful people and institutions have skin in the game.
If Ukrainians want to avoid being pawns on the Grand Chess board, they need to use this crises to secure some rights. I recommend:
1. Gun Ownership
2. Local Autonomy
3. Competing Currencies
4. Unilateral Free trade
Detailed Account of Money Laundering by Ukraine’s Recently Deposited Politicians
“We sincerely hope that after the publication of this article, both law enforcement agencies and financial monitoring authorities in the appropriate countries will collaborate in order to begin filing criminal charges of money laundering in their jurisdictions.
In addition, we hope to show that in Ukraine there is a close relationship between the ruling elite, many of whom are engaged in systematic and coordinated grand political corruption and money laundering abroad.
This article was written with the assistance of information published in the following websites: Ukrayinska Pravda and Nashi Groshi.”
Bus loads of Russians arriving in Donetsk with bats.
“his is a letter from Donetsk, in southeastern Ukraine, which you have probably been told is the pro-Russian part of the country.
My name is Irina, and I speak Russian, just like most people here. I am a philologist by profession; I graduated from a local university. I have worked as a schoolteacher with small kids. Right now I work in IT. I never joined the protests at the Maidan and I don’t support any existing political party. I’m passionately interested in languages, movies, dresses, shoes and makeup. I cannot say that I am ordinarily a very political person. Before our Ukrainian revolution started, I was devoting my energies to learning how to blend eyeshadow. I’d love to brush up on my Spanish and start learning Italian. In summer my boyfriend and I were thinking of traveling somewhere nice.
Donetsk, where I live, was the political base of Viktor Yanukovych, the former president of my country. Donetsk gave (political) life to Yanukovych. Donetsk will (politically) smash him. This opinion has been common in Kiev since the beginning of the Ukrainian revolution. Today it has become a reality. There are zero Yanukovych supporters in Donetsk these days. People are angry because they have been massively fooled by him and his regime.
People are also mildly confused, which is a good sign, because it means that they are thinking. I believe that people here in Donetsk are about to restart their value system and recharge their senses. This process needs time. Because taking responsibility for your freedom means doing something—learning, working (often for yourself, not some oligarch), controlling the government instead of choosing another power-hungry “czar.” And I am sure that soon they will understand and accept this freedom with gratitude.
The revolution gives us this chance, but the counter-revolution has come, and come from abroad, from Russia. Russia has invaded the Crimean peninsula, as I am sure you know. Ukrainian sailors and soldiers in Crimea are under siege on their bases or blockaded in their ships, being treated as if they have no right to know the truth and to feel righteous anger. These brave men tell us, the 45 million people who support them, that they will stay loyal to their oaths of service to Ukraine. I pray that they stay alive and no one has to die.
But Crimea is not the only place where we see Russians. Here in southeastern Ukraine they come as what we like to call “tourists.“ This means busloads of people are coming from across the border of Russia, armed with bats and other unpleasant things, who come to beat Ukrainians who support their new government. They came to Kharkiv and beat the students there, and now they have come here.
I never imagined waking up in the morning, looking out the window and seeing armed people wearing masks outside, or knowing that they are somewhere near. It’s absolutely beyond my peaceful and non-violent reality.
On March 6th, about ten thousand people took part in demonstrations for peace and for the unity of Ukraine at Lenin Square in Donetsk. No one was surprised to see around 1,500 hired mercenaries and pro-Russian activists at the same time in the same place. The two groups of demonstrators were separated from each other by three lines of police.”

Crimea Billboard
Hard to believe the extent to which the Russians are pushing the Nazi meme despite all evidence.
Both Soviet patriotism and the fake sort of patriotism that Putin attempts to invoke derives its legitimacy from winning WWII. Defeating Nazism two and a half generations ago is pretty much all they have.
Hence you get this ridiculous billboard in Crimea:
I can’t imagine too many residents take it seriously, having lived there for the past twenty years of corrupt but otherwise tolerant Ukrainian rule, and with even special provisions made for Crimean autonomy.
Someone should sneak up there at night, paint over “ili” and put an “=” sign.

The blogger reported that some of these pictures belong to different actions from 2009 to 2010. This means that Russian neo-Nazis are already for 5 years in the Crimea:
