Latvia’s Russians protest against escalating EU-Russia tensions
Give them a little land near the border with Russia, and redraw the map. Separate the populations. A large percentage of Russians is a threat to sovereignty.

As a result of heavy fighting, the Donbas battalion has suffered heavy losses and was forced to withdraw from battle near Ilovaisk, the battalion’s press service reported on Facebook, August 19.
At 22:00, the “soldiers of the Donbas battalion withdrew from battle near Ilovaisk,” the press release stated. Four soldiers of the battalion were killed by militants and the battalion commander Semen Semenchenko was wounded.
“The battalion commander Semen Semenchenko was wounded in the morning, but he was evacuated from the battlefield in time. He’s now in a hospital (in Dnipropetrovsk). The operation was successful. Recovery will take 2-3 weeks… Today all day there was a very complex and fierce battle and as a result a large number of Donbas soldiers were injured. We are determining the exact number of the wounded.
Also, it is with great sadness that we announce that four heroes were killed by terrorists. We express our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims. We mourn this tragic loss together. All of Ukraine is weeping for them. Killed on this holy day (Feast of the Transfiguration — Ed.).”
Later, President Poroshenko’s press secretary, Sviatoslav Tseholko, reported that the president had spoken with Semenchenko and that he would be awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, which is given to citizens of Ukraine for outstanding merit in defending the sovereignty and security of their country.
At the same time, the Shakhtarsk Battalion reported on Twitter that it is still fighting near Ilovaisk and that two of its soldiers were killed and 6 wounded.

Russia Wants Bulgarians to Stop Vandalizing Soviet Monuments
Russia is demanding that Bulgaria try harder to prevent vandalism of Soviet monuments, after yet another monument to Soviet troops in Sofia was spray-painted, ITAR-Tass reported.
The Russian Embassy in Bulgaria has issued a note demanding that its former Soviet-era ally clean up the monument in Sofia’s Lozenets district, identify and punish those responsible, and take “exhaustive measures” to prevent similar attacks in the future, the news agency reported Monday.
The monument was sprayed with red paint on the eve of the Bulgarian Socialist Party’s celebration of its 123rd anniversary, the Sofia-based Novinite news agency reported.
The vandalism was the latest in a series of similar recent incidents in Bulgaria — each drawing angry criticism from Moscow.

Curt on Video Production Costs
VIDEO PRODUCTION RELATIVE COSTS UKRAINE VS UK.
Studio for 2 hrs, 3 camera setup, two soft lights, backlights, chairs, desk, delivered as a rough edit: $300. Two videos $600. Same in London $3,000. Two videos $6,000 Yes. That’s right. Cost of 3 Nikon Cameras with standard lenses, three tripods, two box lights, back light, a few extension cords, and a hotel room to make it in… about 4K. Cost of using existing Mac/iMovie, zero. Joy of synchronizing three videos and sound, priceless. So you give that to the guys in Lviv to edit for you.
I love Ukraine.
Curt on why Eastern Europe hates Russia
WHY DOES EASTERN EUROPE HATE RUSSIA? BECAUSE THEY SHOULD.
“It was those early morning hours that we learned to dread.” The little Latvian woman trembled and tried to keep back the tears, but she continued to speak with quiet dignity. “That was when the secret police would knock on the door and take people away. Usually we never heard from them again. Sometimes we heard that they had been shot, and sometimes that they were still alive somewhere in Siberia, but we never knew. Whole families would be taken, separated, their houses would be occupied by the Soviet authorities. During the Russian occupation of the Baltic countries, almost half the populations of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia were taken away. Sometimes the whole family would be sent to Siberian prison camps, but that was a death sentence too, usually within a year, from cold and starvation and overwork. Others were told to get out of their homes with just the possessions they could carry on their backs, they were told to migrate east, wherever they could find a place, but of course there weren’t any places, and they tried to live off the land, but mostly they just starved along the way, the aged and crippled first. But in the end there was no chance for any of them, and the Russian authorities knew it. I guess they wanted to get rid of all of us Latvians, and they didn’t care how.”
She paused, trying to keep her composure. “I wasn’t on their June 14 [1941] list, but I heard that I was on the next one. But in the meanwhile the Germans came, in the invasion of Russia. Naturally we ran to them as if they were saviors. But they were no better. Still, two from our family managed to get through to the West, my brother and I. As far as we know, all the rest died. We never heard from them again. I don’t know how they died, I do know there was a big purge. The best Latvian army officers, including one of my brothers, were ordered by the Russians to some ‘field maneuvers‘, and then they were all killed by the Russians, with bullets in the back of the head, and dumped into a mass grave.”
I thought of the student who had sat in that same chair in my office just a week before and told me that the Soviet way was the wave of the future, and that “the Czechs had it coming.” And of the professor who had broadcast a speech that evening saying that “the United States has become so bad that it must now be liberated by Soviet Russia.” I wondered how many mass graves for Americans he was planning as the price for American “liberation.”

Another Twitter War with Putin Libertarians Scott Horton and Daniel McAdams
Look at this conversation. Read the thoughtful essay by a RUSSIAN libertarian which I originally posted. And then tell me that scott horton and Daniel mcadams aren’t traitors. https://twitter.com/Roman_Skaskiw/status/501368907391709184
I tweeted that article of a Russian libertarian which Yuri sent to me to several American libertarians. (Scott Horton, James Corbett, Ron Paul, Justin Raimondo)
http://pc.blogspot.in/2014/08/putins-libertarians.html
I did not send it to Daniel McAdams because I’ve come to believe the unbelievable — that he’s a conscious Kremlin agent who repeats Kremlin talking points NO MATTER WHAT. But he got wind of it from Scott Horton.
His reaction?
The article is “idiotic” and I’m “obsessed with Putin.”
What the hell is wrong with these people? It’s a thoughtful, analytic, heavily sourced article. Please read it yourselves and judge. Also, Doesn’t someone living in a country being invaded by Putin have the right to be a little obsessed?
I’m so mad. I can’t get over this betrayal.
Situation 18 August
I’m not sure the corridor isolating Donetsk is still under Ukrainian control. There were television reports of a Ukrainian withdrawal following a very heavy Russian attack this weekend. 20+ Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the battalion which covered the withdrawal of the others.
The reports of gains made the Ukrainian military in and around Luhansk are accurate as far as I can tell.

New DPR Terrorist Leader Boasts of Russian Aid: 30 Tanks, 120 Armored Vehicles and 1,200 Soldiers Trained in Russia for 4 Months.
On 2:20 of the video Zakharchenko reports that the reinforcement received from Russia consists of 30 tanks, 120 armored vehicles and 1,200 troops, who have been trained in Russia for 4 months.
Yesterday, it was reported that Russian military convoy crossed the border independently of the “humanitarian cargo”, which consists of about 250 trucks, and which, according to Moscow, delivers “humanitarian aid” to the Luhansk region. Radio Liberty writes that reporters of The Guardian and The Telegraph witnessed the military convoy crossing the border near Donetsk after dark on August 14. According to the report, the convoy consisted of about 23 APCs, which were accompanied by logistics and vehicles. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu assured that Russian troops are not related to sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
