Ukraine: “We should expect invasion”

The Ukrainian news website Tyzhden recently ran a long interview with retired General Mykola Melnyk that’s filled with insights and wisdom about what’s really going on in Ukraine now, militarily speaking. Melnyk’s credentials are impeccable.

. . . .

Q: The question that is of greatest concern to everybody: is the Ukrainian army with its weaponry capable of stopping the Russians? And will the Russians launch a full-scale military conflict in spite of everything?

A: I won’t lie to you: it will be extremely difficult to stop them with the army alone. The 75,000 troops that were brought in to protect the Olympic Games in Sochi are the best of the best, and they all still remain on our border, plus many other forces have been added in recent weeks. According to my information, there are now about 150,000, maybe even more. Unfortunately, I think Putin will not stop. Indeed, everywhere where there are attempts to destabilize the situation, we should expect invasion. And that means almost the whole South and East of the country. A huge problem is the loss of control over the state security system, something that the Russians have made the most of – and above all, this involves the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Security Service of Ukraine. As far as weapons are concerned, our levels are approximately the same, although Russia’s are more modernized and more accurate. We have enough identical tanks, small arms, as long as we have the crews, plus we need components. We lag behind in aircraft and missile units.

Our weapons are often better than Russia’s, but lately everything was shipped for export and nothing was purchased for domestic use. In view of this, I recommend the new leadership turn its attention to the state-owned enterprise that sold the arms – with exceptional profits for itself and enormous losses for the state. Nevertheless, the patriotic spirit of Ukrainian troops is extremely high. Plus we have an excellent mobilization potential of top-notch military experts. So if Russia launches an attack, there will be very many casualties, but she has no chance of winning, because we have limitless human resources and moral superiority.

Regrettably my assessment is close to General Melnyk’s: Russia is likely to launch a full-scale invasion in an effort to occupy South and East Ukraine, where ethnic Russians exist in some numbers. But this will unleash a terrible war that, like so many of them, will be easy to start and very difficult to end, because there are plenty of Ukrainians who are willing to resist the ancient Muscovite foe to their dying breath. There is still time to avert this catastrophe, let us hope Putin decides to do so – the choice is his.

Гей, була в мене коняка… (folk song)

FB Conversation about EU, Russia & cultural destruction

Michal
Oh yeah the EU is so wonderful. You can do what ever you want as long as Brussels approves. Free travel to destroy the cultural identity of the entire continent. All these new EU members really want is some security and economic prosperity, but it comes at a price. See the trends of increasing public and private debt and decreasing religiousness as the east is “westernised”. This is not happening by chance.

Paul Michal, in Soviet Union there was also free travel that destroyed cultural identity (or at least tried) – free travel to Siberia (my father got the ticket) or to steppes (for Crimean Tatars).

We, people of the borderlands, need to make practical choices. And even if we loose our national identity it is way better to loose it in EU than in (Soviet) Russia…

Roman I would say that burning Ukrainian language books and stabbing to death pro-Ukrainian protesters is a little more serious destruction of cultural identity. Both things happened last week in Ukraine. There has been no analogous violence toward Russians.

New Hair. New Location. Same Prostitute. Same Propaganda. #actress

The same Russian propaganda actress has appeared in about a dozen different location claiming to be a different concerned local resident in each:

Political “actress” spotted again during Luhansk “referendum”

2014/05/12 • News

fe49db8-baba-115.jpg.pagespeed.ce.yqvqT5tHWWThe separatist actress Maria Tsypko, who was recently in Odesa taking part in pro-Russian demonstrations, then in Sevastopol as an unfortunate refugee from Odesa, persecuted by the authorities, has now turned up in Luhansk as an organizer of the “referendum.”

The relevant video from one of the voting committees was made available by Volodymyr Yehorov.

Previously Maria was spotted in Odesa while collecting funds for tents and other needs of the separatist camp. (start at 10:35)

Then she was in Crimea, where she tearfully described how pensioners collected their meager donations just so she could travel to Sevastopol to ask Russia for help.

They’ve shown more resolve since then, installing a border barrier, and digging in fighting positions.

I’ve heard interviews with soldiers in Sumy saying they are overwhelmed with gifts from the populace. I also heard a report of Ukrainian special forces near the border in Donetsk being asked to move away from a village b/c the village didn’t want any fighting near them.

Statement from Grand Duchess Maria of Russia

A supposedly “libertarian” friend of mine posted this to his FB account.

From the Head of the Russian Imperial House

H.I.H. Grand Duchess Maria of Russia

On the Recent Events in Ukraine

The recent tragic events in Ukraine have filled my heart with enormous grief and sorrow.

It was not long ago, while visiting the ancient city of Kiev—the cradle of Slavic statehood—and the glorious and heroic Crimea, that I was filled with joy at seeing how Ukrainians of such different ethnic backgrounds, religious convictions, and social and political views all nonetheless maintain peaceful and harmonious relations with one another.

Now, Ukraine is experiencing upheavals that can only be compared to the calamitous events of the revolution. And history shows that no revolution has brought happiness to any of the sides that take part in it.

I pray for the repose of the souls of all those who have lost their lives in these events, for the quick recovery of the injured, and for a cessation of violence.

I call upon all citizens of Ukraine, regardless of their political views, not to forget that they are all the sons and daughters of a common homeland and not to allow that common homeland to slip into a fratricidal civil war.

For the sake of the integrity of the Ukrainian State and the unity of its people, no one should in any way or under any circumstances yield to the temptation for revenge or retaliation. May all of us remember the words of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearer, Emperor Nicholas II: “evil cannot vanquish evil, only love can.”

Interview with creator of FB group “Confused Pro-Putin Libertarians”

A British Expat who lives in Lithuania set up a Facebook page recently to call out libertarians who are taking the side of Russia in the conflict over Crimea. Calling it “Confused Pro-Putin Libertarians,” Mark Splinter is using his platform to educate people on why Putin’s military invasion and sham election are illegitimate and unworthy of defense by people such as Congressman Ron Paul and others.

We interviewed Splinter on his project to find out more about his worldview and why he believes so many libertarians are confused about what’s happening in Ukraine.
