Russian News Reports Ukraine’s Gold Sent to US
1. Ukraine has gold?
2. Can’t trust Russian news, so take this skeptically.
Over 123% of Sevastopol residents vote to join Russia!
I’m accused of being a Neo Con :)
This was in response to my calling his acceptance / rote repetition of of the 93% Crimean “vote” result.
We are supposed to be the smart ones. I thought it was obvious, but I’ll lay it out here anyway:
1) I have never taken the Ukrainian nationalist line. I’ve argued against western intervention, the EU, NATO and stated repeatedly that Ukraine would be better off without Crimea and the East despite those regions having slim to moderate majorities *against* secession. Don’t believe me? Judge for yourself:

http://romaninukraine.com/thoughts-on-crimea-donetsk/
2) The libertarian media, and many libertarians themselves seem to have gone bat shit crazy. I can’t decide if they’re stupid, or if they’re their on the Kremlin payroll. As Yuri Maltsev (a well-known Russian libertarian) put it: “I am glad that there is a growing opposition to Putin’s regime in Russia itself. The list of eminent Russian intellectuals against aggression in Ukraine is much longer than those confused libertarians who support “Russian national interests” (Mises and Hayek would detest such an expression).
Here is Ry Dawson calling Ihor Kolomoiski a Nazi. Kolomoiski is not only Jewish, but one of the pillars of Ukraine’s Jewish community.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Wv6lgyOUGk#t=39m30s
Bandera, the historic figure Ry talks about fought against the Nazis after they denied the creation of a Ukrainian state in 1941. His brothers died in Aushwitz.
Here is Paul Craig Roberts using the term “human-rights trained Ukrainian police”, this was written before the major blood shed of Feb 20, but after cases of the police kidnappinig injured protesters from hospitals. http://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2014/02/20/ukraine-drifting-toward-civil-war-great-power-confrontation/
One such protester, a scientist, was kidnapped, beaten and left in the woods where he froze to death.
It’s one thing to critizise US involvement. It’s another to turn such a blind eye to the barbarity of Russian puppet regime which until recently occupied Kyiv.
The leader of the mobile “auto-maidan” survived his capture and beatings: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303743604579354020533912650
And of course, we have our own Axxxxx Jxxxxxxxxxx accepting at face value and repeating that 93% of Crimeans want secession. “We must honor their desire.” How is to possible to belive this? Seriously. How is possible to look and think this is legitimate and honest?
– A poll last month showed 41%.
http://romaninukraine.com/of-population-who-wants-to-join-russia/ This is consistent with polls taken in previous years.
(Again, I’ve argued that Ukraine would be BETTER OFF without Crimea, but I can’t stand for rote repetition of Kremlin Propaganda in this community which I value.)
– There was a referendum in 1991 too. Then 54% voted to join Ukraine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_independence_referendum,_1991. Do really, honestly, legitimately believe that the percentage shot up to 93%?
– How about the fact that “stay with Ukraine” wasn’t even a fucking option on the ballot?
– How about the fact that 123% of Sevastopol residents voted? http://euromaidanpr.wordpress.com/2014/03/17/over-123-of-sevastopol-residents-vote-to-join-russia/
– How about the fact that Crimean Tartars (who were the majority population until the Russians forcibly deported them and resettled the area) did not vote? https://twitter.com/BSpringnote/status/445235587994640384
– How about journalists with Russian passports voting in the election? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXG67YJVZuQ
I can go on, but I think you see the point. Nobody took this election election seriously.
Also how (the fuck) is it possible to look at the recent Pro-Putin rallies in Moscow and think “traditionalist conservative revivalism”? http://romaninukraine.com/pro-putin-rally-in-moscow/
ps – Goddamn right I’m Russo-phobic. As are Poles, Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Georgians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Estonians, Moldovans, Romanians, Bulgarians and many Belarussians.
Are you sure you want to uphold Russia as a model for civilization? Maybe all the way from Iceland they seem like good neighbors. Look closer.
My own reasons for Russophobia:
– There’s the torching of Ukrainian-language books in Crimea and Kharkiv:
https://twitter.com/JozeBiscak/status/445245085148385280/photo/1/large
– There’s the knifing of pro-Ukrainian protesters by Russian rent-a-thugs: http://romaninukraine.com/2-pro-ukrainian-protesters-in-donetsk-murdered-under-chants-of-russia-russia-russia/ in Donetsk. (the victim was a local)
– And there a very long sad history which I won’t go into.
Supporting Russia (The Russian Federation) is a complete sell out of both nationalism and libertarianism. Paleos who support Russia have no principles left.

Carpatho-Ukraine (Ukrainian: Карпатська Україна, Karpats’ka Ukrayina) was an autonomous region within Czechoslovakia from late 1938 to March 15, 1939. It declared itself an independent republic on March 15, 1939, but was returned to Hungary between March 15 and March 16, 1939, remaining under Hungarian control until the Nazi occupation of Hungary in 1944.

Pro-Putin Rally in Moscow
“The most media attention was paid to the wondeful March for Peace in Moscow today, where at least 50,000 people showed up (some insist it was 100,000, others – 20,000) to support Ukraine and peace. These are the photos from a pro-Putin rally also took place in the Russian capital today. The images are so shocking, it’s really difficult to believe it actually happened.”
Provocateurs Posing as ‘Right Sector’ (?)
PLEASE READ TO THE END
This morning at 12:00 I wake up in a rented apartment in the center of Kiev , where we celebrated his birthday . I go out on the balcony. Balcony overlooks the courtyard , on the playground. What I’ve seen on – will remain forever in my memory.
I can hear the screams and see the bottom right under the balcony as six people in camouflage , Balaclava , and headbands with the symbolism of the UPA and the right sector , armed with batons , and ( as it turned out , because I’m not an expert on weapons ) Kalashnikovs , brutally beaten and kicked batons lying on the pavement two people . I screamed , cried for help . In all the windows and balconies were people instantly . One of the soldiers began to camouflage shooting into the air. Residents povybegali yard. One , from lying on the pavement, completely gory face, the entire asphalt in the blood ( as it was then reported doctors – a man was hospitalized with severe traumatic brain injury ) . What happens next is something terrible , six in camouflage pushed, beaten anyone who comes into the yard , there are also a woman, together with balconies hear screams, that would at least not to touch a woman . Comes police , ambulance, representatives of the Right TV. Who are these six camouflage nobody knows , they still do not remove their balaklav and still not lowered machines . The decor is more than just tense. Next long negotiations : police – inhabitants of the house – Camouflage guys – representatives of the Right – journalists . Periodically tied fights, heard constant screaming. All delayed up to 3 hours of the day .
Six turns with Kalash does not speak the Ukrainian language and hardly even Bekaa Russian (!) And then , with a strange accent . Their ammunition and body armor does not look like a valid appearance representatives of the Right . They left right say : “We are of the right sector organizations ” , and no further specific requirements do not push and do not go to the contact . In general, any thinking person becomes obvious that this kind of pure provocateurs and their appearance – no more than a masquerade.
Next in a nutshell : uncle came deputy Sergei Pashinsky and took six titushek with a camouflage , it is unclear on what grounds , it is unclear where and why . Weapons they had not taken away the mask with them removed .
Night watch on TV a hundred times twisted reports and read materials about the incident , written Kiev Dimka Kiseleva :
– ” According to a witness : a man no one beat , he fell and hit the hood of the car ”
– ” In the city center there was a fight with the participation of representatives of the” right sector ” and the police ”
– “Shooting and wounded : he had done the right sector at the center of Kiev ”
Well and relevant comments , of course, also included: “Soon I’m afraid to plunge Ukraine into chaos such groups Makhno ”
In general, what we have seen today , horribly reminiscent of my favorite film by Alfred Hitchcock , with one difference – Happy End in today’s incident is not.
Do not get fooled by the provocation , take care of yourself .
Glory to Ukraine !
Thoughts on Crimea / Donetsk
From an email to a friend:
Well, there’s no way in hell it’ll be a fair vote. They will vote to join Russia. That’s guaranteed. I mostly feel sorry for the affront to Ukrainian sovereignty, for the Ukrainians and Tartars living in Crimea, for the fact that Russian hooligans burned Ukrainian language books in Crimea. I feel angry that Ukrainians are surprised Russia didn’t honor the deal that involved Ukraine giving up its nukes in 94 in exchange for a guarantee of territorial integrity. Russian betrayals of treaties are a prominent feature of Ukrainian history. We should stop being such suckers.
So I feel sad and angry for all of these things, but I would not feel bad for the loss of Crimea, or for eastern provinces. I think it would make Ukraine stronger. I’ve Tweeted that Ukraine should do with its Russified areas what Israel did with Gaza. This is anathema to many nationalists, but until we achieve an armed citizenry and a bit of warrior culture, it’s the practical solution, especially when we live next door to a drunken bear.
And yes, I’ve been paying to attention to the marches in Moscow and elsewhere. Those are the internal divisions I was talking about in my DB essay. If NATO or the USA arrived, the anti-war movement in Russia would vanish.
Everything that I’ve read about Crimea indicates that it’s a heavily subsidized region, so making it Russia’s problem would help Ukraine economically.
Wrt the east. Regular people there are desperately poor. Yes, they have big industrial bases, but it seems to create oligarchs instead of creating wealth. Here’s what a writer from Donbass said after visiting Lviv: https://www.kyivpost.com/opinion/op-ed/donbas-seems-to-be-a-place-with-no-future-125549.html
I suppose tax revenue is a legitimate concern, though the oligarchs are of the political class so perhaps their industries are excused from taxes. I don’t know.
If you look at a map of protest victims, you can also accuse the east of free riding on sacrifice of western Ukrainians: http://romaninukraine.com/map-of-protest-victims-by-region/

Curt on Putin’s Folly
END OF RUSSIAN CHANCE AT BECOMING A MODERN CIVILIZED COUNTRY
–” the chances of Russia’s becoming a modern, civilised country, open to the world and respectful of its citizens, are diminishing with every outburst of war hysteria on Russian television.”– The Economist
I don’t know what “open to the world” means. And I probably disagree with whatever the author intends. But the fact is that it’s a profoundly corrupt government and its people live in relative poverty because of it.
I want ‘my tribe’ free. And Russians are part of my tribe. An insular Russia grossly protective of its citizens is a good thing for my tribe. An insular Russia that suppresses corruption is a good thing for my tribe. An insular non-democratyc, non-corrupt, economically prosperous Russia is good for the world.
But an expansionist, corrupt, economically cancerous Russia defeats every purpose.
Yes. I’m angry. I would love to live in Moscow to watch that country evolve. Now, with one absolutely absurd move, the opportunity is lost for all.
It was trivially easy to trade the renting of Crimea for discounted petroleum prices for Ukraine, with the extension of dual citizenship to all Crimeans who desired it, and dual citizenship for all Russian Ukrainians who desire it.
And the guy would have been a freaking hero.
Idiot.
