I want to map out all the propaganda flying back and forth from WWII to these protests. Its evolution has been fascinating to me.

Someone needs to write a detailed analysis of this conflict from the paradigm of a revolt of the Dnipropetrovsk mafia (which has ties to Europe and the Jewish community) against the Donetsk mafia (which has ties to Moscow).
Dnipropetrovsk Mafia:
Pinchuk
Kolomoyskyi
Yulia Tymoshenko
Pavlo Lazarenko
Serhiy Tihipko
Yatzeniuk (?)
Andriy Klyuyev (?)
Donetsk Mafia:
Yanukovych Family
Rinat Akhmetov
Dmytro Firtash (? – temporary allegiance)
Vadym Novinsky
(This list is not complete and may not be accurate. Elmer, Andriy, can you help me?)
A fairly exotic source, the Tehran Times, reports on secession referendum in Donetsk: http://www.tehrantimes.com/component/content/article/114438
I’ve been to Donetsk for an economics lecture (see here, here).
The people seemed to be of mixed identity eager to shake of the negative image which President Yanukovych and his mafia has saddled them with. Some expressed their Ukrainian patriotism to me. I’m certain they are of mixed identity.
A referendum would be great.
I would love for this story to be correct. I wouldn’t mind the referendum voting against continued Ukrainian sovereignty in favor of autonomy (unlikely) or Russia (more likely). Then perhaps Donetsk and their infamous mafia hold a referendum and go away.
Sadly, the crime bosses who control Donetsk would make sure any referendum keeps Donetsk with Ukraine. They are Russian and Akhmetov is Tartar, but they get use the country of Ukraine as a gigantic ATM machine and they want to keep it that way. If they have to invoke Ukrainian patriotism, they’ll do that.
The perspective of the oligarchs defies the dominant east vs. west geopolitical narrative of this struggle.
Among the nationalists in this video is Topaz, who has been a recurring character. If you look through my earlier posts, you cna find him in the video of Titushka’s beating a Russian journalist (who attempted to portray them as heroes). He was also captured and interviewed by protesters. He was released unharmed apparently.
The pro-Russian protesters show no such mercy.

“Two people have died of their wounds as a result of injuries in the storming of the Kharkiv State Administration Building by Russian nationalists on 2 March, ATN.ua reports, citing a medical official.
Dmitry Pilipets, co-organizer of EuroMaidan in Kharkiv, confirmed that the two people who died were members of his movement.” http://www.interpretermag.com/ukraine-liveblog-day-13-beatings-in-kharkiv-defections-in-crimea/
After being off-line for a while, I just reinstalled my BitMessage client. Same address:

Read about Bitmessage here.
It’s a secret way of communicating using the blockchain technology pioneered by Bitcoin. The biggest drawback right now is that if my client is not running for several days, messages will bounce back to the sender instead of waiting for me.

The “One Ukraine” idea is emerging very strong from this conflict. I need to be mindful of this when I advocate local autonomy and make sure people understand that it’s a bulwark against corruption, not a division of the country.

“Predicting the imminent collapse of the U.S. dollar, a Russian lawmaker submitted a bill to his country’s parliament Wednesday that would ban the use or possession of the American currency.
Mikhail Degtyarev, the lawmaker who proposed the bill, compared the dollar to a Ponzi scheme. He warned that the government would have to bail out Russians holding the U.S. currency if it collapses.
“If the U.S. national debt continues to grow, the collapse of the dollar system will take place in 2017,” said Mr. Degtyarev, a member of the nationalist Liberal Democrat Party who lost in Moscow’s recent mayoral election.

“I am a citizen of the Russian Federation, a Russian Jew, who’s been living in Ukraine for five years. I have never had a problem with the fact that I’m a Russian speaker, or with my Jewish music. Not in Lvov, or Kiev, or the Maidan. I’ve never seen any “Banderite-fascists,” Nazis and anti-Semites–it’s a myth. Putin, with broad support from the people of Russia, sent troops into Ukraine: this is not, in any way, protection against extremists. It’s a war against a peaceful, independent country. Shame on Russia. It is a terrible misfortune.”
~Mitya Gerasimov
See the beginning of my tour of the Lychakivski Cemetary for a brief discussion of the Galician SS Division.
For a broader engagement of the subject, I recommend Timothy Snyder’s book, Bloodlands. He details the plight of people trapped between Stalin and Hitler.
Poem by Pavlo Tychyna. Written in 1919. English translation (might be better) by Michael Naydan
And Bely and Blok, Esenin and Kliuev:
Russia, Russia, Russia of mine!
…There stands Kyiv tormented a hundredfold,
and I, crucified two hundred times.
Yonder everywhere is: the sun!
– they’re singing: Messiah! –
Ukraine will raise its own Moses –
it has to be!
It can’t be like this forever, I sense it, I know.
To laughter and storms, to the thunder of revolts,
from all my nerves into the steppe I send:
poet, arise!
And the black earth rises up, staring me in the eye,
and distorts its face into bloody laughter.
Poet, to love your homeland isn’t a crime
when you do it for the good of all!
Notes (thanks Andriy!):
Michael M/ Naydan In this text – Kliuev is Nikolay Kliuev – Russian poet who glorified the Russian countryside and the peasant. He died in prison camp in 1937.
Now we have two Kliuev brothers – oligarchs from Yanukovych’s clan. Both are now in black list of European banks. Andriy Kliuev was a right hand of Yanukovych during revolution and he is recognised as author of attacks on Maydan.
You may also pay attention to second stanza – “swampy road” – protests on Болотная площадь (Swampy square) was huge protests against Putin in Moscow 2-3 years ago.
Russian media has been commenting on this photo as an example of Ukrainian Nazi’s running amok all over Crimea. This is the same uniform “Titushky” wore at Maidan when they fought against the protesters beside the riot police. Also, these are Russian weapons. Also, why do they all have irregular clothes but identical boots?
I think Tim Snyder nailed it when he said about the Yanukovych regime “[It] is telling itself that its opponents are Jews and us that its opponents are Nazis.”
The same might be said of Putin’s propaganda. The man who allegedly raised the Russian flag in Kharkiv seems to have a softspot for Nazi’s if VK researchers are correct:
I should write a piece about the historic and present day rhetoric being used by both sides…
Ukraine needs to embrace its historic role, not to mention the strategic reality, that makes it a border land.
It needs to resist influence from both Moscow and the West. The self-reliant spirit of the Kozaks could not more perfectly fit this reality.
Within this role, Ukraine needs to find liberty. I recommend:
1. gun ownership
2. decentralizing the bureaucracy
3. competing currencies
4. unilateral free trade
