The protests became violent today. Protesters threw bricks and Molotov cocktails at police. It seems like the police are showing restraint. Or else, they’re outnumbered and don’t want to advance yet. Boxer-turned politician Vitali Klitchko got sprayed in the face with a fire extinguisher at some point. See the link below for pics.

I just learned that barricades are being built in L’viv to keep reinforcements from moving from the Army barracks here to Kyiv.

Anti-Protest Laws “Passed” by Ukraine’s Government

They were sort of passed without a vote. Apparently, the opposition disabled the electric voting system, so the speaker called for a show of hands and, without making any visible effort to count them, delcared the laws passed.

The laws criminalize all sorts of behaviors, including wearing helmets during protests.

Russia is a state in search of a culture (and Ukraine is a culture in search of a state).

Verteps

During the holiday season in Ukraine, which, by some accounts, lasts a month and a half (vid Romana do Jurdana), performance troops wander about. They dress as characters from the manger scene of Jesus’ birth and either sing carols or do performances.

I had just sat down in a coffee shop when an old man opened the door and called to the ladies behind the counter in a surprisingly powerful voice? “Can we carol?”

Because of the layout of the coffee shop, all the carolers — ten or so — surrounded by table. When they finished another man threw grain on me. Down my shirt. Intentionally. :)

Ha! The years 1939-1941 do not exist as far as Russia is concerned. :)

Interesting factoid: There are more Russian Orthodox churches of the Moscow patriarchy in Ukraine — where people are more religious and where they compete with the Kyiv patriarchy and the Ukrainian-Greek-Catholic church — than in Russia.

The church is completely state controls and acts as another organ of government. Its bishops and patriarch are probably the richest religious men in the world, as evidenced by their $30,000 disappearing watches: http://static1.businessinsider.com/…/kirill-watch.jpg.

They’re not cultural marxists, but they are cultural totalitarians.

If Putin wants to save Russia he needs to give up central control and allow local autonomy, especially for all those Muslim mountain people. He can give them Chechnya and Dagestan or else they’ll keep populating Moscow. His choice.
